I just read on the Christianity Today website that Father Richard John Neuhaus, the Lutheran-turned-Catholic social commentator and founder of the magazine First Things died yesterday (link; First Things obit).
Neuhaus, a staunch support of President Bush and his actions in Iraq (at least at first – I don’t know about later), was also a friend of Stanley Hauerwas (the committed pacifist), though their relationship strained with their disagreement over this (whether it was repaired, I don’t know).
I heard him speak at Duke once, and got the chance to talk to him about his conversion from the Lutheran to Roman Catholic Church. He did this years ago, long before many other Lutherans were making the same jump.
Whether or not I always agreed with him, I will miss his commentary from the ‘Naked Public Square’.
