Happy Christmas!

To all my family, friends, and readers, I hope that you have a very Happy Christmas!

  1. Will,

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I’m curious (and this will be a stupid question), but do they say “Happy Christmas” in England (as opposed to “Merry Christmas”)?

As I say, I’m just curious. You don’t hear “Happy Christmas” that often here, as you know.

    God bless!

  2. Happy Christma, Will.
Wyman – On the Saturday before Christmas our local card shop was busy with people who had run out of Christmas cards and found they had received cards from people to whom they had not sent cards. One such lady, said to me that she had bought her cards through her local church but was finding it hard to find suitable cards WITHOUT Merry Christmas on them, which she refused to buy! She said ‘Merry’ made it sound ‘boozy’! I was amused because she was a high Anglican, whereas I ( a Methodist total abstainer) was buying cards with a mixture of messsages on them.

  3. Hi Wyman and Olive:

Wyman, I heard the same as Olive – that ‘merry’ implies drunkenness. Everyone here usually says ‘happy’, so I say it, too.

  4. Wyman, there is a saying in Britain that goes ‘Eat, drink and be merry’ which is often associated with parties and I suspect that is why the merry is tied to drink.
Of course the saying is based on Isaiah and Ecclesiastes where the proper quote is ‘Eat, Drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die’!
